Winter arrived with a magical surprise in Paris this year—snow fell much earlier than expected! The first snow of the season graced the city on November 21, transforming its charming streets into a winter wonderland. For those who adore Paris in the snow, this early snowfall was an extraordinary gift.
Living in Paris, I’ve learned that snow here is a rare and fleeting delight. While cities in colder climates see snow regularly, Paris snowfall is unique and unpredictable, making it all the more special. This year, the unexpected November snow was a dream come true for anyone yearning to see the City of Light draped in white.
Below, I’ll share the magic of Paris winter pictures, tips on what to expect, and my own wanderings to capture stunning moments of Paris in the snow.
Well, perhaps this is the most anticipated day by Parisians in winter, it is a snowy day in Paris. My Canadian friends laughed at me when I talked about how happy I was when it snows. But it doesn't matter. Those who live in Paris for a long time will definitely enjoy a few hours of the city under the snow.
Snow in Paris is something I look forward to very much in this winter. These are the images I captured within 2 hours wandering the favorite streets on the first snowy day in Paris in 2024.
Snowfall creates a quiet enchantment, softening the city's iconic architecture and adding a whimsical touch to everyday life.
Does It Snow In Paris?
Yes, Paris does snow every year, but extremely little, yes, I repeat extremely little both in quantity and in time.
How much snow does Paris get? The amount is typically small, with snowflakes gracing the city only a few times a year. This year’s snowfall was a rare event for November, reminding us that even a light snow covering can completely transform the city’s vibe.
When does it snow in Paris?
Usually January and February every year. The last time I saw heavy snowfall was in February 2018. At that time the city was covered in white under the snow and the view of the city at that time was wonderful.
Snow often falls in January and February, with temperatures just hovering around freezing. But this early snowfall in November was an exception, turning Paris into a picturesque snow globe far earlier than usual.
How often does it snow in Paris?
Not very often, of course. Whenever the temperature drops to around 0 degrees Celsius, I hang up my phone to check if it snows in the coming days. Chance of snow in Paris, I think, only about 20-30%. Even on very cold days, the likelihood of getting snow is very low, probably because there is a lot of traffic in a city, temperatures are often higher than in the suburbs. When it does snow, it doesn’t last long, sometimes melting within hours.
For me, every snowfall in Paris feels like a little miracle. Even though it’s rare, the joy of capturing Paris winter pictures makes every snowy moment unforgettable.
Where to Enjoy Paris in the Snow
Paris offers countless stunning spots to enjoy during snowfall. Here are a few of my favorites:
Montmartre:The narrow cobblestone streets and charming cafés like La Maison Rose look especially magical under a light dusting of snow.
Eiffel Tower:A quintessential location, the Eiffel Tower surrounded by snowy gardens creates perfect opportunities for Paris black and white images.
Le Consulat Café:This picturesque café at Montmartre becomes even more inviting with snow on its rooftops and cobbled paths.
Seine Riverbanks:The riverbanks take on a serene beauty when framed by snow-covered trees, making them ideal for a peaceful stroll.
Snow Memories: Then and Now
The last significant snowfall I witnessed in Paris was in February 2018, when the city was blanketed in white for a few glorious days. While this November snowfall wasn’t as heavy, it was just as enchanting. It reminded me of those beautiful scenes from years past—walking through Montmartre or standing near the Eiffel Tower as snow fell softly around me.
I captured several black-and-white photos this time, inspired by the timeless elegance of snow-covered Parisian streets. These moments truly highlight the beauty of Paris in the snow, offering a glimpse of the city in a different light.
Why Paris Snowfall is Special
For Parisians, snow is an event worth celebrating. Unlike cities accustomed to frequent heavy snowfall, Paris’s rare snow days are cherished. The light snowfall, combined with the iconic architecture, makes every winter photo a postcard-worthy memory.
